A six-foot humanoid robot stepped into a cage with a human fighter, and what happened next looked straight out of a Terminator movie. The viral REK video shows the machine delivering powerful kicks that sent Frankie LaPenna across the cage, raising a bigger question about how close human-like robots are to becoming a real part of everyday life.

Loading...×Human-versus-robot fights have long been a part of science fiction, but a recent video has made that idea look a little less fictional. A six-foot-tall humanoid robot was seen fighting influencer and content creator Frankie LaPenna inside a cage at a REK event in San Francisco, with footage showing the machine throwing punches and kicks at the human fighter.

Robot enters cage fight and takes on human fighter

The fight was organised by US robotics company REK as part of its work on a virtual reality combat game. The concept involves humans remotely controlling humanoid robots and using them in head-to-head battles.

In the video shared by REK, LaPenna and the robot enter the cage before the bout begins. The machine moves around the enclosure and appears to warm up like a human fighter. Once the fight starts, LaPenna throws several punches at the robot, which responds with its own punches and powerful kicks.

At several points, the robot's kicks appear to send LaPenna across the cage and into the walls. Despite the force of the strikes, the influencer continues fighting.

REK described the event as its first human-versus-Terminator robot fight. "We just made history with the first Human VS Terminator robot fight. Frankie LaPenna gave it his all," the company said in the caption posted with the video on X.

REK also said it planned to release more footage from the match. In a reply to a comment, the company's official account said LaPenna "kept going" and "defeated this robot."

Viral video brings back Terminator comparisons

The footage quickly spread online, with viewers discussing what could happen if remotely controlled humanoid robots eventually become part of professional combat sports.

One social media user wrote, "I'm curious how an actual fighter would do against this. I feel a pro would do much better."

Another posted, "Robots and humans fighting will be a part of the UFC in the next 5 years. AI hysteria demands it."

The video also reminded people of an earlier era of humans competing against machines. One user referred to the famous chess battle between Garry Kasparov and IBM's Deep Blue, asking, "Is it too late to go back to Deep Blue beating Kasparov in chess only?"

Others leaned into the science-fiction comparison, with one person commenting, "Terminator got his first practice," while another described the footage as a "dream coming true in real time."

There is an important detail behind the dramatic footage, though. The robot in the REK demonstration was being controlled remotely by a human. That makes the fight very different from a fully autonomous machine independently deciding to attack someone.

Tesla AI head Ashok Elluswamy has also pointed out that demonstrations involving humanoid robots are often remotely controlled, while physical robot safety presents challenges that are different from those associated with large AI models.

Humanoid robots are also being built around safety

The fight comes at a time when robotics companies are trying to move humanoid machines beyond demonstrations and into workplaces. That has made safety around humans a major part of robot development.

Agility Robotics recently unveiled its latest general-purpose humanoid robot, Digit 5. According to the company, the machine uses AI algorithms, cameras and other sensors to continuously monitor people around it and respond by avoiding them, stopping or even sitting down.

In a demonstration, Digit 5 can be seen dropping to its knees when a person approaches. Agility Robotics CTO Pras Velagapudi told Ars Technica that "The robot was designed with a complex safe motion system that can take a variety of different mitigations depending on exactly what sort of human presence is detected."

Digit 5 uses Nvidia's Thor IGX AI platform to process information from vision-based sensors and detect people nearby. The robot is also designed for workplace tasks, including repeatedly lifting loads of up to 50 pounds.

The contrast is striking. One video shows a humanoid robot being used to deliver heavy blows inside a cage, while another shows a machine being designed to stop, move aside or lower itself when a human gets too close.
